Indonesia Aerospace Received Orders CEC 725 and EC 225 Helicopter of Eurocopter France

For almost 20 years the Indonesian aerospace and defence industry would find itself lavished with considerable attention. Investment in facilities and major license production programmes in areas such as aircraft, helicopters and surface combatants followed, even the design of indigenous aircraft. Yet with the end of the ‘Habibie period’ and the onset of democratic government times became hard for the Indonesian defence industry.

Today the industry has managed to bounce back and can demonstrate some impressive capabilities. PT PAL
has launched the first of two Makassar class LPDs for the TNI-AL, which are built to a Korean design, and has also developed very useful commercial shipbuilding skills. PT Pindad has developed the Panser 6x6 Pindad armoured vehicle, inspired by the French VAB, which is entering service with the Indonesian military.

While PT Dirgantara Indonesia is delivering MPA, transport aircraft and helicopters to Indonesia. There is still an immense amount of potential in the Indonesian defence industry. At the beginning of this year PT DI again received orders from foreign helicopter manufacturing. This time the PT DI received orders making 125 helicopters from Eurocopter France.

It is spoken by the Head of Public Relations of PT DI Rahendi Triyatna while talking with detikbandung the sidelines of inauguration of Advanced Helicopter Airframe Start Making 725/EC EC 225 in the hangar KP 4 PT DI Wednesday (2010).

"In the past 78 years been the cooperation with Eurocopter France to assemble the NAS 330 NAS Puma and Super Puma 332 in 85," explained Rahendi.

Added Rahendi, projects with Eurocopter is not the first. "This is a third project between PT DI and French Eurocopter. They asked us to make the EC 725 helicopter with the type of (military) EC 225 (civil)," he explained.

The execution of this project is targeted to take ten years. "Contract 125 units by 2020. Funding purely from the Eurocopter," said Rahendi.

He added that today will be the start of work on this project. PT DI itself will be working on the tail and main body.

"Today is directly done. For the PT DI will be the manufacture of components such as tailboom (tail) and fuselage (main body). Cockpit and assembly is done in France," said Rahendi.

He said he hoped this project could open the eyes of the world to PT DI as an industrial nation capable of creating cutting-edge air kendaaran.

"With this project, we hope that PT DI is better known in the eyes of the world as a manufacturer of aircraft with the latest technology," said Rahendi.

The foundations of the Indonesian defence industry were actually established during the colonial period. In 1920 the German company Fritz Werner established the Pindad factory to manufacture small arms and ammunition in the then Netherlands East Indies (NEI). PT Pindad is still manufacturing small arms and ammunition for the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), as well as armoured vehicles and other systems.


Apart from that, after the independence struggle Indonesian was able to take control of a number of other
facilities that would prove useful in a defence industry context. For example, the naval dockyard at Surabaya
and aircraft repair facilities. The basis of an indigenous Indonesian defence industry had actually been laid during the anti-colonial struggle, when in 1946, six gliders were constructed from locally available materials to help train pilots for the TNI-AU.

Following independence Indonesia decided to establish an aviation industry, an effort led by Nurtanio Pringgoadisuryo, who also acted as the designer and test pilot. A number of light aircraft were designed and
built, many based on foreign designs, and then in 1964 licence production of the PZL-104 Wilga aircraft commenced, with 39 aircraft being built through 1975. Nurtanio was killed during a test flight in 1966, but his
legacy was the basis for an Indonesian aerospace industry.

Then came what we might call the ‘Habibie period’ for the Indonesian defence industry. B.J. Habibie was a
highly qualified aerospace engineer and on his return to Indonesia became a technology advisor to the Indonesian government. In 1976 he was responsible for the formation of the aerospace company PT Nurtanio that eventually became IPTN (today it is known as PT Dirgantara Indonesia). Eventually Habibie created what became known as the ‘strategic industries’ by bringing the management of IPTN, the PT PAL shipyard and Pindad amongst others under one roof.

Smart Eagle II Aircraft Spy Unmanned

Smart Eagle II is the first prototype UAV (Unman Aerical Vehicle) made by PT. Aviator Teknologi Indonesia for intelligence interests in Indonesia, especially for operaional BAIS (Strategic Intelligence Agency).

UAV made in Indonesia was first introduced in the Indo Defence 2006 kepublik, then there are several other prototypes that also included among Wallet-UNV Tactical and RAI-made PT. Mitra Mandiri goodwill.

This is a result of the development and joint research between the Ministry of Defence and Strategic Industries owned by Indonesia.

Smart Eagle II Made Indonesia Air Force

As a vehicle for middle-range observation is Smart Eagle II (hereinafter referred to as SE-II) first appeared in public at the end of 2005. SE II is one component of a set of observations via air system consisting of an unmanned air vehicle (water vehicle), cargo (payload), and the control station (ground control station).

With an empty weight of 65 kilograms and a maximum takeoff weight (maximum take-off weight) 100 kg, SE II, capable of flying for almost six hours while carrying cargo loads weighing 20 kilograms.

Tempo flight includes two hours to get to and home from surgery and four hours to action. Gasoline have capital of 20 liters, SE II can fly as far as 150 kilometers and as high as 30 kilometers with a normal cruising speed (cruise speed) 120 kilometers per hour. However, in emergencies SE II flying speed can be boosted up to 150 kilometers per hour in order to reach locations as far as 300 kilometers.
