SOUTH KOREAN CONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE SYSTEMS

North Korean missile developments were likely the impetus for the initiation of South Korean missile programs. By reverse engineering U.S. supplied missiles, South Korea produced a two-stage, solid-fuel surface to surface missile based on the Nike-Hercules surface to air missile. This development took place in the late 1970’s.

NHK Series

NHK-1 ICBM and NHK-2 (Nike-Hercules-Korea) are in service with South Korean forces. The systems are reportedly capable of delivering a payload of about 450 kilograms to a range of roughly 260 km. South Korea depends on the U. S. for most of its advanced weapons. An agreement between the U.S. and South Korea bans South Korea from developing medium/long-range missiles. However, in order to counter North Korea’s theater ballistic missile development programs, South Korea has just completed negotiations with the US to allow for 300 km missiles.

South Korea currently possesses two types of SRBMs: the NHK-1 and the NHK-2. These ballistic missiles are reverse-engineered from the U.S. Nike-Hercules SAM, with modifications designed to increase their range and accuracy and transform them to strike ground targets. The NHK-1 was developed in 1975 and the NHK-2 was test fired in 1978. The latter reportedly possessed improved electronics and warhead munitions, and could strike targets up to a distance of 250 km, depending upon the weight of the payload.

This missile would have violated a 1979 South Korea pledge contained in a Seoul-Washington Memo of Understanding (MOU) not to build any ballistic missiles with a range exceeding 180 km. However, the United States agreed in September 2000 that South Korea should be able to build missiles compliant to Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) standards, which allows for missiles under 300 km range. Some
experts have implied that the NHK-2 could be modified to carry a nuclear explosive device should South Korea choose a nuclear option.

NHK-A ICBM


South Korea has stepped up its efforts in recent yearsto produce missiles indigenously. The NHK-A is the successor to the NHK-2. Very little information is available on this missile in the unclassified literature. It might
have a range of approximately 320 km, and, if true, would thus represent a violation of the MTCR. Moreover, South Korea might be attempting to build ballistic missile prototypes with a range of 500 km (enabling it to target all of North Korea), albeit only for “research purposes While South Korea has not indicated any plans to build missiles other than those mentioned above, it has an ambitious space launch program and has already developed a family of civilian space launch vehicles.

The singlestage KSR-1, developed in 1993 and the second in the KSR family, could be capable of modifications to become a ballistic missile with a 200 kg payload and a range of 150 km. The KSR-2, first launched in 1997, is a two-stage rocket that reportedly carried a 150 kg scientific observation unit to an orbit of 151.5 km. Although South Korea has not indicated that it intends to convert the KSR-2 into a ballistic missile, unconfirmed reports suggest that it could be used as a ballistic missile with a range from 100 to 900 km.50 Furthermore, the South Korean space program plans to build a satellite launch facility by 2005, where the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) intends to develop booster rockets that could be easily transferable to IRBM and ICBM applications.

South Korea Import KSS-II/ Type 214 Boats Or RoKN Class 214 Submarine Germany

Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW), a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG, and MarineForce International LLP (MFI) have been awarded a contract for the delivery of six material packages to build Class 214 submarines for Korea. The contract was signed between the HDW/ MFI consortium and the South Korean procurement authority DAPA (Defence Acquisition Program Administration). Under the terms of the contract the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) will receive the 2nd batch of Class 214 boats. DAPA selected Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering to build the first boat of this batch.

The request for proposals to build the second boat is to be issued to Korean shipyards in summer 2009.
All six boats will be equipped with an air independent propulsion system on the basis of the fuel cell technology. The 2nd batch of Class 214 for the Korean Navy represents a further development of the already proven overall design for the first three boats. The new submarines will be almost identical to the 1st batch
boats, which were ordered in 2000 and all three of which were built/are being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The first two boats of this class were delivered to the Korean Navy in December 2007 and 2008. The boats’ measurements are about 66 m in length and 13 m in height. They have a displacement of approx. 1,800 t and accommodate a crew of 27. The contract further underlines the position of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as worldwide market leader in the field of non-nuclear submarines.

It safeguards not only industrial core capabilities and jobs at the two ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems locations in Kiel and Emden but also several hundred jobs with subcontractors all over Germany for the coming years.

South Korea K1A1 Main Battle Tank To Fight North Korea

The Korean government supported and promoted the establishment of a national defence industry as a means of increasing self-reliance and also because they believed that defence technology would stimulate other areas of Korean industry. The Korean government continues to promote the capabilities of industry, through bodies such as DAPA and the Agency for Defense Development (ADD). Major local players have also emerged in the shape of Doosan Infracore, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), Rotem, Samsung Techwin, Samsung Thales, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (now owned by Hanwa), Hyundai Heavy Industry, Hanjin and the Poongsan Corporation amongst others.

Tank developments in Korea show how the capabilities of the Korean defence industry have evolved. In the
1970s the ROK Army was looking for Developing Capability a new tank that would meet its exact operational requirements under the name of ROKIT (ROK Indigenous Tank). In 1980 they negotiated an
agreement with Chrysler (now General Dynamics Land Systems), who had designed the M1 Abrams tank,
whereby the US company would design a tank to meet the ROKIT requirements and then transfer the
technology to Korea to allow local manufacture.

The ROKIT prototype was completed in 1983 and went into production at Hyundai (now Rotem) in 1984 as the K1 tank. Rotem would manufacture in excess of 535 K1 tanks, as well as a family of special vehicles based on the K1 chassis including a recovery vehicle and a bridgelayer. This set the stage for the next evolution in the ROK tank programme with the development of the K1A1 tank. Work on the K1A1 programme started in 1991 with the aim of providing the ROK Army with a tank that offered increased firepower (the 120 mm M256 44-calibre gun was selected) and more protection, the fire control system of the K1A1 was developed in Korea by Samsung Thales.

The XK2 Black Panther Main Battle Tank will remain in production through 2010. The evolution from the K1 to the K1A1 saw the evolution of tank design and building skills in Korea, this was a true indigenous tank. Equally important was the development of Korean capabilities at the systems and sub-systems level. This further enhanced the local technology base and provided the basis for future growth.

One of the key programmes that demonstrates the sophistication of the Korean defence industry is the Altay tank programme for the Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC). Rotem in Korea had developed the XK-2
Black Panther tank for the ROK Army (see below) and the technologies developed for this programme provided the ability for the Korean company to become the key technology partner for the Turkish tank programme in competition against proposals from many of the traditional tank building countries.

Future growth was definitely on the agenda in Korea, in 1995 work started on a next generation tank at ADD that would eventually lead to the XK2 Black Panther Tank made South Korea. The prototype XK2 was displayed in March 2007 by ADD and Rotem and the tank is on course to enter ROK Army service in 2011.

The XK2 Black Panther South Korea Main Battle Tank is a true state-of-the-art main battle tank featuring a 120 mm 55-calibre gun fed by an automatic loading system, the tank has a crew of three and protection is provided by a Korean-designed modular and composite armour system.


South Korea Made K-9 Thunder By Samsung

The Samsung Techwin K9 Thunder was one of the first L52 solutions on the market and Korea the first to deploy such a weapon in South Korea. Outside of South Korea, the K9 Thunder’s biggest success so far has been the selection of the 155/52 calibre system by Turkey in 2001, where it is known as the Firtina, with as many as 300 required. For Land 17 the Australian variant has been dubbed AS-9 Aussie Thunder. The platform has a combat weight of 43.6tonnes, is NBC protected and its all welded steel design is proof against shell fragments and medium calibre rounds.

Each K9 Thunder MBT has a maximum range of over 40km, can carry 48 rounds and can co-ordinate firing to deliver simultaneous arrival of three rounds to target, made possible by the K9’s fast fire rate of three rounds in the first 15 seconds of a fire mission. As many as 24 rounds.

Turkey has proven to be a very successful market for the Korean  defence industry. The TLFC had developed a requirement for a modern 155 mm self-propelled gun system, which could then be modified with
Turkish equipment to meet their exact needs. Samsung Techwin won the tender with its K-9 Thunder system which was then modified into the Firtina configuration for TLFC featuring systems from Turkish companies such as Aselsan. The Turkish Air Force has also turned to Korea, acquiring the KT-1 training aircraft from KAI.

The K1A1 is an upgraded version of the K1 MBT. Its lethality and combat firing range are much enhanced
by mounting a 120mm smoothbore gun as its main armament, improving Gun/Turret Drive System and adopting a ballistic computer for 120mm ammunitions, while it retains the K1 MBT’s outstanding maneuverability and technology oriented fire control system ; 2-axis stabilized sight, a thermal imager usable at night and in all weather conditions and the “hunterkiller” function.

Mobility

To deliver the required horsepower and speed on demand, the K1A1 is equipped with a turbo-charged 1200
horsepower diesel engine providing a power to weight ratio of 22.6hp/ton. The transmission has a planetary gear train with 4 forward and 2 reverse speed-modes. The transmission is also equipped with a hydrodynamic torque converter. Shifting the automatic transmission through the various speed ranges requires only a slight force applied to the shift selector.

This shifting arrangement allows the driver to concentrate completely on his driving and tactical maneuvers. In high gear, the K1A1 can attain a maximum road speed of approximately 65km/h. The K1A1 can travel 500km without refueling. To further enhance the K1A1’s maneuvering capability, the vehicle can pivot around its vertical axis within its own length at the driver’s discretion. This maneuver is accomplished by permitting one track to move in the forward direction while reversing the other. Also, its ground pressure of 0.9kg/cm2, which is equivalent to or lower than that of any 40ton-class tank, enables it to successfully maneuver in swamp/marsh zones.



Fire Power

The K1A1 tank’s dual-axis stabilized fire control system is equipped with day and night vision capabilities, which, in conjunction with the electro-hydraulic gun laying system, makes it capable of acquiring a target accurately within a minimum time frame.

Armament

The K1A1’s main armament is a 120mm smoothbore gun supported by a 7.62mm(M60E2-1) coaxial machine gun and turret mounted 12.7mm(K6) and 7.62mm(M60D) machine guns. Normally the commander operates the 12.7mm weapon while the loader fires the 7.62mm weapon. Additionally, the K1A1 tank has two smoke grenade launchers, mounted on each side of the turret for instant concealment.



Survivability

The K1A1’s unique compact configuration provides the tank with a low silhouette, total height of 2.25m form the ground to the top of turret roof. It has a chassis ground clearance of 0.46m, exceptionally high in comparison with other tanks.

The welded hull and turret are designed to give the vehicle maximum ballistic protection. Crew survivability is
maximized by the adoption of the Special Armor Package in major areas, which offers greater protection for crew and equipment against chemical and kinetic energy projectiles.
