M1117 Guardian Armored Security Vehicle (ASV) Supports The U.S ARMY Operations

The M1117 Armored Security Vehicle (ASV) supports the military police missions of law enforcement, area security, battlefield circulation and enemy prisonerof war operations during wartime and operations other than war for corps-support MP companies. In addition, the ASV will serve as the convoy protection platform
(CPP). The vehicle system is a turreted, armored, all-wheel drive vehicle that provides increased ballistic and land mine protection. Its primary weapon is the Mk 19 automatic grenade launcher, but it can also mount the M2 .50 caliber machine gun. The fully enclosed turret includes a day/night sight for target acquisition.

To provide infantry and cavalry fighting vehicles with digital command and control capabilities, significantly
increased situational awareness, enhanced lethality and survivability, and improved sustainability and supportability.

The Bradley M3A3 Cavalry Fighting Vehicle (IFV/CFV) features two second-generation, forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensors one in the Improved Bradley Acquisition Subsystem (IBAS), the other in the Commander’s Independent Viewer (CIV). These systems provide “hunter-killer target handoff” capability with ballistic fire control. The Bradley A3 also has embedded diagnostics and an Integrated Combat Command and Control (IC3) digital communications suite hosting a Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below (FBCB2) package with digital maps, messages, and friend/foe situational awareness. The Bradley’s position navigation with GPS, inertial navigation, and enhanced squad situational awareness includes a squad leader display integrated into vehicle digital images and IC3.

The Bradley M2A3 and Bradley M3A3 provides overwatching fires to support dismounted infantry and to suppress and defeat enemy tanks, reconnaissance vehicles, infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), armored personnel carriers, bunkers, dismounted infantry and attack helicopters. The infantry version (M2) of the A3 Bradley fighting vehicle is used most often to close with the enemy by means of fire and maneuver. The primary tasks performed by the cavalry version (M3) as part of a troop and/or squadron are reconnaissance, security and flank guard missions.


The A3 integrated combat command and control (IC3) package incorporates the Army’s digital command and control suite of automated messages, overlays and friend or foe graphics that meet the Army’s
objectives for a fully digitized force. This same digital command and control capability is also being incorporated into the A2 Operation Desert Storm (ODS), including a squad leader’s display for messages
and graphics.

The new A3 variants reflect the latest iterations of a fighting vehicle family that includes the Bradley M2/M3A0, A1, A2, A2 ODS, IFV/cavalry fighting vehicle (CFV), Bradley fire support team (BFIST)
vehicle, M2A2 ODS engineer vehicle and Bradley Linebacker. Additional Bradley variants, based on the associated tracked M270 multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS) chassis, range from command and
control systems to armored medical treatment vehicles.

M1 Abrams and M1A1 Abrams MBT Vs Leopard 2 MBT

M1 Abrams MBT

Currently in service in four countries, including some 8000 in use by the US Army and US Marine Corps (USMC), the M1 Abrams is widely considered an excellent main battle tank (MBT) in all the key areas:
protection, mobility and firepower. It would appear that from a platform perspective the M1 Abrams is at least as capable as the Leopard 2 and Challenger 2.

Protection: Recent combat experience in Iraq would suggest that the M1 Abrams is very well protected and able to survive kinetic energy projectile attack during close combat across a variety of battlespaces. The M1 Abrams was the spearhead of the US advance into the Iraqi interior an operational environment as complex as any and it survived under medium- to high-intensity conventional warfighting conditions and some asymmetric attacks about as well as can be expected. No other armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) used by the US afforded the same level of battlefield protection.

The well-sloped glacis plate and frontal turret armour seem sufficient to prevent penetration from RPG fire and 23mm cannon fire from any angle. And, of course, it should do that and more at a combat weight of 65 tonnes (M1A1 version). The rear-mounted engine grille is reportedly vulnerable to armour-piercing rounds fired from cannon of 25mm calibre and above, but then again, how often does a tank (used in a combined arms battlegroup and supported by mechanised infantry as the Australian Army would) come under attack from behind? As in all late-generation MBT, the turret roof of the M1 Abrams remains vulnerable to overmatch from top attack anti-tank guided weapons, of which there exist numerous types in widespread use.


The M1 Abrams’ armoured side skirts are a stand-out feature of this vehicle and appear to be at least 60mm thick. Unlike the rubber-armoured skirts fitted to Army’s current Leopard AS1, these skirts are all armour and would clearly be effective in stopping AP heavy machine (HMG; 12.7-14.5mm) rounds and RPG fire from close range. Firepower: While it is common knowledge that the 120mm tank gun equipping late generation Western tanks is superior in every ballistic sense to 105mm ordnance in the tank-on-tank role, a chief concern for Army will be to ensure it has access to a variety of 120mm ammunition natures better suited to providing direct fire support to infantry than high explosive anti-tank and armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot (APFDS) rounds. These include high explosive squash head and canister rounds; the latter proved so devastating against enemy infantry in Vietnam.

One firepower advantage the M1 Abrams has over the Leopard 2 and Challenger 2 is the secondary armament array at the crew’s disposal. Together with the standard M240 7.62mm machine guns mounted alongside the main gun and at the loader’s hatch, a 12.7mm M2 Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) weapon station is installed in front of the commander’s station. With a 360-degree, electrically-powered traverse and 1000 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition stowed on board, the crew is able to engage a wider selection of targets of opportunity without resorting to use of the main armament particularly crew-served weapon teams, exposed infantry, softskinned and light armoured vehicles. American crews fighting in Iraq found the versatility of the M1 Abrams’ secondary armaments highly effective, particularly when ranges were too short to use the main gun or when its use was restricted due to collateral damage considerations.
Total main gun ammunition loads stowed onboard the M1 Abrams and the Leopard AS1 are 40 x 120mm rounds and 59 x 105mm rounds respectively.

Mobility: There have been no adverse reports concerning the mobility of the M1 Abrams, at least none that this author knows about. Like all modern tracked AFV it is safe to say that the M1 Abrams enjoys superb cross-country mobility across a variety of terrain types.

Of more interest to the Australian Army is how well the M1 Abrams will perform in the varied but typically confined terrain of Australia’s immediate region of interest. Clearly, there are those who believe that a tank of this weight cannot traverse the jungle and tropical terrain encountered across our region (in spite of Australia’s success at operating the 50 tonne Centurion in Vietnam). But it should be borne in mind that the M1 Abrams is a highly manoeuvrable platform with a good power-to-weight ratio (better than that of the Challenger
2 but not as high as the Leopard 2A5) and will be operated by a unit (1st Brigade’s 1st Armoured Regiment) noted for its expertise in operating in close country.

While the M1 Abrams is wider than Army’s legacy Leopard AS1 (by about 25cm overall), it will make mince
meat of ‘track bashing’. Same goes for the Leopard 2 and Challenger 2. Interestingly, the 406 M1A1 Abrams of the USMC are fitted with a deep-water fording kit for amphibious operations and additional tie-down points for ship-to-shore movement in landing craft.

Deployability: With the new tank (regardless of type) likely to be in service within 12–24 months at the very latest, the way in which the ADF’s existing infrastructure and support equipment will accommodate and cope with the introduction of a larger and heavier tank will become an issue. Army will most certainly need new low-loader tank transporters. Each tank squadron will need new recovery vehicles able to lift and
winch the new tank. Rail-rolling stock will need to be assessed as to its ability to carry heavier tanks, where vehicle width will also be a factor. Same goes for rail and ground infrastructure such as tunnels, bridges, crossing points and road surfaces around base and training areas.


Despite being the heaviest tank under consideration (the Challenger 2 is longer and the Leopard 2 is wider), the M1 Abrams is, in fact, no less deployable than the Leopard 2 or Challenger 2, as has been widely assumed in the mainstream media. Whether a tank weighs 55 or 65 tonnes is of little relevance; it’s the support equipment and infrastructure a deployable force has in place that makes the difference. Compatibility with the RAN’s existing amphibious transport vessels is certain to be one area where remedial work will
need to be undertaken.

Again, this will be irrespective of which tank is selected. For example, the rear ramp of an LPA is rated to only 50 tonnes. Basically, this enables the ramp to support a 50-tonne load unsupported (i.e. relying on its support chains and own structural strength). Given that the last of the LPA (probably Manoora) is not due to pay off until 2017, this will need to be rectified. From an engineering perspective, it is understood that beefing up the structural strength of the ramp is achievable; the RAN recently made similar changes to ensure the LPA stern ramp could support the 42-tonne Leopard AS1.

The US offer of the M1 Abrams to Australia is understood to involve a fully optioned package that includes
open and ongoing access to US Army and USMC M1 Abrams upgrades and rolling technology insertion programs out to 2020 and beyond. This will enable the Australian Army to tap into the product improvement initiatives for the US M1 Abrams fleet throughout life-of-type picking and choosing those most applicable to our strategic circumstances and capability requirements, including those implemented as a result of the most recent combat experiences.

Quite possibly as a result of the BRDM-2 AT vehicle's successes in the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, the US decided to have an ATGM carrier too. The prototype was selected from three contenders in 1976, and production commenced in the same year. By 1996, when production ended, over 3200 of these modified M-113A2s had been built. Eight nations use the M-901 or a variant thereof, and the FIST-V is technically a variant of the M-901. The clever-rabbit part of the M-901 is the inclusion of all the missile targeting kit into the 13extendable launcher (called the "hammerhead").

This means you can keep the bulk of the vehicle hidden behind some convenient obstacle - a berm, hill crest, or maybe somebody you don't like - and plink away at the enemy with the TOW from that cover. Here's an old Warsaw Pact trick hide behind a destroyed tank, and you'll be a little harder to spot. The launcher has
powered 360 deg traverse, and elevates from -30 to +34 deg.


The M901 ITV is a powerful ally, but must be used from a distance; it's armor is less than the Bradley's, so you don't want to be trading shots with the enemy. Words to the wise keep these babies at maximum range, 2 -3 kms from the enemy, in defilade. The maximum range of the TOW-2s is 3750m, so try to engage the enemy from as far away as possible, and make sure that they aren't the center of attention, as the launch signature is highly visible and will telegraph the M901's position to the enemy. Long range is good, but if you have the time, use a couple of alternate battle positions and keep them moving between them. One lucky shot, or an artillery barrage will finish one of these things for good, and it's not like you'll have as many ITVs as the
enemy will have BRDM-2 ATs. When used properly by a seasoned commander, ITVs can really save your bacon. Just keep in mind that they are a fairly limited resource.

M981 FIST-V Fire Support Team Vehicle

The M981 FIST-V is one of the many variants of the M113 family. It is an Artillery Forward Observer Vehicle and is used primarily to spot, locate, designate and correct artillery fire from a forward location on the modern battlefield. It also enables the FIST headquarters to acquire and lase targets for terminally guided munitions and to coordinate fire support while keeping up with the maneuver unit. The resemblance to the M901 ITV (Improved TOW Vehicle) is not an accident; it gives it the ability to remain inconspicuous as an FO to the enemy.

In Steel Beasts, artillery called within the LOS of a FIST-V will arrive sooner because the FIST team can cut through the red tape better. Instead of waiting two minutes for rounds to impact, you may only have to wait 45 seconds.


The M981 FISTV (Fire Support Team Vehicle) is a United States Army armored vehicle designed to house an Artillery observer team in mechanized units. It is based on the ubiquitous M113 Armored Personnel Carrier chassis. It was based on the M901 Improved TOW Vehicle (ITV), and outwardly closely resembles it, so as to make it less conspicuous on the battlefield.

Like the Leopard 2, the M1 was undertaken after the MBT-70 project collapsed in disarray. Also like the Leopard 2, the used a combination of advances in armor and powerplants to deliver a notably advanced vehicle, once teething troubles were ironed out. Early M1s were armed with a 105mm rifled cannon, like the one that graced its M60A3 predecessor. The M1A1 (featured in Steel Beasts) improved the armor and upgraded the 105mm rifle to a 120mm smoothbore cannon. Recently, the M1A2 model has been provided, adding various improvements to fire and command control, and more armor. The M1 is built in the US, as well as being assembled in Egypt, and is in service with the US Army and Marines, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The M1 is the first really good tank the USA has built. The M1's biggest shortcomings are high cost and a very thirsty engine it drinks 50 gallons of fuel an hour, whether idling or running flat out but these are made up for by a very good package overall. Mobile, heavily-armed, and well5 protected, the Americans have tweaked the M1 from a good basic design into a tank they can rightly be proud of.

The M1A1HA (Heavy Armor) refers to the up-armored version, which incorporates a layer of depleted uranium mesh in the armor package. It basically doubles the protection of the original M1 against both shaped-charge and kinetic energy warheads. However, as you'll soon discover in Steel Beasts, "excellent tank" doesn't mean "invincible tank". Your frontal armor may be nearly impenetrable to most enemy tanks at ranges over 1500 meters which means it is penetrable at ranges under 1500 meters, and also penetrable from the sides. Lots of OPFOR vehicles carry ATGMs that will knock out critical systems even if they don't
achieve a catastrophic hit.

Your cannon is worth a lot less once all the fancy fire control gear is shaken to bits by a non-penetrating
hit! Play it smart, go slowly and carefully, coordinate with your supporting infantry and artillery, and you should find that it dominates the battlefield. If you try the "tank rush" tactics from an RTS game, you'll soon be commanding a burning wreck. At some point after initial release, the mine clearing equipment will be implemented in the game, and it will be used by both sides. M2A2 Bradley IFV Main Battle Tank Fighting Vehicles

The M2 Bradley had a long and tortured development. The program was initiated in the early 1960s, seeking a vehicle to complement the M113. The first two prototypes did not appear until 1978 - the better part of two decades - while the M113 steadily fell into obsolescence as a battlefield vehicle. The M2A2 Bradley IFV finally entered production in 1981, a year before the BMP-2. Regardless of the acquisition process, the M2 turned out reasonably well. It is fast enough to keep up with the M1 and packs a good punch (although the TOW is outranged by the heavier Russian ATGMs). It is taller than the BMP, which makes it easier to hit, but also allows it to fire in support of its own squad more easily.

The armor has been upgraded over the years. Its amphibious ability is limited by the time needed to prepare the vehicle, unlike the BMP which needs only a minuscule amount of preparation, but arguably the cost savings is worth it. Perhaps the biggest debate surrounding the Bradley also surrounds all other ATGM-armed infantry fighting vehicles.

In Steel Beasts, as in real life, the M2A2 Bradley IFV poses a conundrum to commanders: is it a battle taxi for the squad, or is it a heavy ATGM carrier that happens to have some infantry inside? The battle positions most effective for the TOW (maximum range: 3,750 meters) are far from those best for the squad, whose maximum effective range is likely to be under 600 meters. A squad armed with manpack ATGMs makes the problem easier given the increased punch from the dismounted squad, but this simply raises again the purpose of the vehicle: is it A) an armor killer or B) a leg infantry support vehicle?

In the end, of course, the answer is C "both"; and for all the difficulty of deciding how best to employ the M2A2 Bradley IFV in a given tactical situation, it is doubtful it would be as valuable if the options were fewer. Just remember the M2A2 Bradley IFV packs one helluva punch, but it's limited armor means it can't go toe-to-toe with heavy opposition. Keep them moving most of the time, and if they aren't the center of attention, they should be able to take care of themselves.

The fmt production M1A2 Abrams tank rolled off the line at Lima Army Tank Plant on 1 December 1992, the fmt of 62 production tanks for the U.S. Army. The Army also plans to upgrade over a thousand M1 (105-mm) versions to the newer M1A2 (120 mm) configuration beginning in 1994. The MlA2’s outstanding performance makes it the main battle tank of choice for Saudi Arabia, which will purchase 315, and Kuwait, which will buy 236 MlA2s. At the time, the United Arab Emirates and Sweden were also looking at the M1A2 for their future main battle tank. Technical testing is ongoing at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Yuma Proving Ground. The initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOTE) will evaluate a company of M1A2 tanks in an operational environment this fall at Fort Hood, Texas. The First Unit Equipped (FUE) for the U.S. Army is currently slated for the third quarter of F’Y 95.

The M1A2 Abrams maximum rate of fire is about six rounds per minute; if a single M1A2 were to engage a half dozen enemy tanks, the Abrams would be subject to return fire for nearly a full minute, since each opponent would have to be dealt with sequentially. On the other hand, a properly-designed, missilearmed
FCS could lock onto all six enemy vehicles simultaneously and salvo fire one missile at each target in perhaps
less time than the M1A2 crew would take to achieve its first kill. This would give an FCS-equipped force a
great advantage when fighting outnumbered.

Ideally, the FCS would use a multipurpose missile that can be employed not only against armored vehicles, but the entire array of ground and aerial targets encountered on the battlefield. As on modern naval vessels, it would probably be wise to include a small or medium caliber gun for close range and low priority targets, but this would depend on the capabilities of the missile system.

Substitute “battle tank” and “land warfare” for the terms “battleship” and “naval warfare,” and the paragraph
would read almost as if it were printed in a current issue of ARMOR. Admiral Knight’s words should stand as a note of caution to those who think the MBT is here to stay. Just as the self-guided missile has displaced the gun in naval warfare, so is it sure to do in ground combat. The question is, will the Armor community follow Javelin and Longbow Hellfire on the path to the future, or will it stay on the same dead end street that doomed the battleship to oblivion?


The M1A2 retains the best features of the Abrams family: 120-mm main gun, reliable and powerful drive train, and the heavy armor package. Some of the major enhancements on the M1A2 are the Intervehicular Information System, 1553b Data Bus, Commander’s Independent Thermal Viewer, Improved Commander’s Weapn Station, a position navigation system, and Built-in Test and Fault Isolation. These major improvements, along with other enhancements, make the Abrams even more fightable, and bring the tank into the 21st Century.

The M1A2 Abrams MBT posted great results in all three desert regions. In Sharourah, Saudi Arabia, soldiers from the Fort Knox M1A2 New Equipment Training (NET) team trained the Saudi crew members using the tank, and table top trainers. Using the tank’s Po the crews completed a challenging 148-kilometer navigation course consisting of 15 way points. The U.S. and Saudi crew members fited a total of 102 main gun rounds during the demo. The exercise was a huge success. The Saudi soldiers and leaders were very impressed with the oved performance of the tank.

TYPE 90 JAPANESE MILITARY INDUSTRY

The third-place finisher is a surprise, coming from a nation never known for its tank technology. The Japanese Type 90 MBT, built by Mitsubishi, visually resembles the Leopard 2, uses the 120mm gun originally developed by Rheinmetall, and adds an automatic loader, permitting a three-man crew. Neither the government or the contractor have put out much information on the Type 90, making it a sort of “mystery tank,” but the Type 90 is, according to the report, “thoroughly modern and sophisticated, even more advanced in some of the areas of fire control and vehicle electronics than the highly publicized (French) Leclerc, Leopard 2A5, and M1A2.

“It is the fire control suite and advanced vehicle electronics that really make the Type 90 a world-class tank. The well known Japanese prowess in electronics has been exploited to the fullest extent in  the Type 90 MBT. While some details remain clouded in secrecy, the fire control suite has an automatic target tracking capability and it has long been rumored that some sort of target recognition/queuing and/or threat prioritization capability is incorporated in the suite.”

The Type 90 is powered by a 1,500 hp Mitsubishi diesel that provides a power to weight ratio similar to other worldclass tanks. At 50 tons, the Type 90 is less heavily armored than designs intended for combat in Western Europe and the crew compartment is thought to be cramped. “All these things considered, the Type
90 is one of the top operational tanks in the world today,” the report concludes.

Britain’s Challenger 2 main battle tank is successor to the successful Challenger 1 which was used to great effect in the first Gulf War. Challenger 2 proved equally as effective during the second Gulf War in 2003 – and is still providing valuable support for Warrior crews in Southern Iraq. Distinctive changes to the Challenger include Thermal Exhaust Cowls to reduce exhaust heat signature on the hull rear sides, thermal identification panels and filter louvres on the turret, and side armour with sand reduction skirting.

When Challenger 2 Tank was being developed in the early 1990s the British Army worked very closely with industry to avoid the flaws experienced with Challenger 1 and incorporate the lessons learned from the Gulf War. However, it had not been tested in desert battle conditions, and there were poor results and several
incapacitated Challengers, when the tanks took part in exercises in Oman in 2001. Omani tanks, all Challenger 2E models and designed for the desert, had no problems.

The exercise exposed the tank’s weakness to dust and fine sand. Modifications to fans and filters doubled useful life in the dustiest conditions, and the side skirts were extended to prevent dust being thrown up towards the air intakes. All the work was carried out in Kuwait before hostilities began.

No Challengers were lost through enemy action during Operation Telic. On 27 March 2003, 14 Challengers of C Squadron, RoyalScots Dragoon Guards, engaged a column of 14 ageing T-55 tanks in what is credited as being the British Army's biggest tank engagement since World War II. None of the Challenger tanks was hit and all the T55s destroyed. Announcements are soon expected to be made on the upgrade of the Challenger 2 with a 120mm smoothbore gun which will involve reconfiguring the turret and changing stowage
areas within the turret and hull. It may involve collaboration with the German firm Rheinmetall.

A lot of U.S. tankers would disagree, but a consulting firm called Forecast International, asked to rate the world’s tanks, argues that the most recent version of the German Leopard 2A6 edges out the M1A2 as world’s best. “This potent tank has been greatly improved in the latest operational version, the A5 (Improved), maintaining the lead that it has held for some time,” the report concluded. It noted that the version of the Leopard 2A6 that was recently adopted by the Swedish Army after competitive trials is “even better than the A5 as used by Germany. This is due to the incorporation of a new, advanced command and control system and the Galix vehicle protection system. The Leopard 2S also features a new passive armor system.”

The German Army’s version of the Leopard 2 has also been upgraded with a longer gun tube and new ammunition. This version is called the Leopard 2A6. The M1A2 was rated as having the best crew protection of the tanks rated. Its IVIS system also drew high marks for its communication capabilities.

Other features of the Leopard 2 series that drew high praise were the tank’s MB 873 diesel engine, improved turret armor protection, and a new all-electric gun control and stabilization system that eliminates the danger of a hydraulic fluid fire and operates more quietly. New fire control components and some repackaging of the components within the turret have improved the “fightability” of the tanks, making the Leopard’s “hunterkiller” target acquisition even more effective. But the report noted that the Leopard 2’s lead over the M1A2 had closed over the years and was now exceedingly small. Much of the rating hung on the improved cannon.

The addition of the Commander’s Independent Thermal Viewer, with its target hand-off capability, brought the Abrams to the same level as the Leopard 2 in terms of a “hunter-killer” target acquisition system. Unlike all other tanks, the newest Abrams also has the Inter Vehicular Information System which, as the report notes, “Adds a significant capability that is lacking in most other tanks; in point of fact, with regard to the vital communications task, due to the level of interconnectivity, the M1A2 beats out the Leopard 2 hands down.”
The Abrams’ passive protection (its armor) was rated the best in the world.

The Abrams led the world in adopting the gas turbine engine. One can argue its advantages and disadvantages, the report noted, but few nations are willing to adopt these engines because of their high
fuel consumption versus diesels: “The performance of the engine on the M1 is not questioned; many nations feel that the associated support of the vehicular gas turbine-powered Abrams is just too much for them to afford.” On that point, an MTU diesel has been integrated into the M1 which is under consideration by the
Turkish Army.

The system enhancements recently funded for the Abrams will improve fire control, command and control systems, and other electronics and “will keep this tank at or slightly ahead of the Leopard 2 in the area of electronics,” the report said. While the U.S. has looked at the longer 120mm gun tube being adopted by the
Germans, the Germans do not use depleted uranium penetrators and may have needed the additional barrel length to equal the lethality of the U.S. system, according to one U.S. officer familiar with current armament development. The report stressed that lethality was a major consideration in the Abrams’ high ranking, given its overwhelming superiority in the fighting to liberate Kuwait.

The M7 Bradley Fire Support Team (BFIST) Vehicle provides an integrated Bradley-based fire support platform, based on the M2A2 ODS vehicle, that enables company fire support teams (FISTs) and company fire support officers to plan, coordinate and execute timely, accurate indirect artillery and mortar fires.

The M7 BFIST is equipped with an inertial navigation system, targeting station and lightweight computer units with the forward observer system (FOS), all integrated on a 1553 data bus. These features provide the crew with a highly accurate point-and-click targeting capability, stationary or while on the move, day or night, under all weather conditions. The M7 BFIST is also armed with a 25 mm automatic cannon and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun common to the Bradley fighting vehicle family. Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below (FBCB2) was fielded to M7 BFIST in FY 2003.

The M7 Bradley FIST is designed to replace existing forward observation vehicles in the U.S. Army inventory, and adds an inertial navigation system and a new targeting station control panel. A mission-processor unit automates the fire-request system. BFIST gives the FIST the same mobility, signature and survivability as that of the supported maneuver units. Additionally, BFIST can observe indirect fire while on the move and employ direct fire systems that can make a difference not only in self-protection, but also in supporting the maneuver force.

BFIST is a point-and-shoot and point-and-lase system for fire supporters. Its features are dramatic improvements over the FIST-V and equate to new capabilities to derive accurate target location at the push of a button--no targeting head to erect, no initialization of targeting systems each time you stop, no additional night sight to install and no challenge getting the ten-digit grid into the digital system.


M7 Bradley Fire Support Team (BFIST)  



M6 Bradley Linebacker

The M6 Bradley Linebacker is the Army’s only slew-to-cue Stinger missile shortrange air defense platform. The Linebacker is equipped with a standard vehicle mounted launcher (SVML) and associated electronics and a digital link to ground-based radar. Track data and command and control information are integrated through the forward area air defense (FAAD) command and control system. In addition to the Stinger, the Bradley Linebacker is also armed with a 25 mm automatic cannon and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun common to the Bradley fighting vehicle. The weapon system includes a Mode 4 identification, friend or foe (IFF) sensor capable of positive identification of friendly aircraft. The Linebacker weapons are controlled from under armor and can acquire and engage targets while on the move, day or night.

The M6 Bradley Linebacker  An air defense variant, these vehicles are modified M2A2 ODSs with the TOW missile system replaced with a four-tube Stinger missile system. Despite the fact that the vehicle is superior to the Bradley Stinger FV (the crew does not have to dismount and can fire on the move) and the M1097 Humvee Avenger (since it is tracked and armored) these are due to be retired from U.S. service.

Combat engineer battalions in Army heavy divisions have historically traveled the battlefield in the venerable M113 personnel carrier. The M113 was the workhorse of the Army for decades and provided indirect fire protection for the soldiers assigned to ride in it and excellent cross-country mobility. The drawback to the M113 was that it could not provide sustained direct fire support nor could it maneuver with current infantry and armor weapon systems on today’s modern battlefield. In 2000, the Army made the decision to field the M2A2 ODS Engineer (ODS-E) Vehicle, which is the same as the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle variant except for the stowing of engineer-specific equipment.


The M6 Bradley Linebacker With the advent of the M2A2 ODS engineer vehicle, the combat engineers now have the capability to maneuver with the infantry and armor combat systems and provide direct fire support to dismounted engineer soldiers from their own platform. The engineers will also have the onboard
Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below (FBCB2) system that ties the engineers into the common digital picture and provides them real-time situational awareness and command and control. With the
ODS-E and FBCB2, the combat engineers are able to provide even more combat power. It has been fielded to elements of III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas.
